Paint Protection Film (PPF) is a thermoplastic urethane film, that is usually self healing, with an adhesive backed layer, that is applied to painted surfaces of vehicles (usually, although not it's only use) to protect the vehicle from rock chips, minor scrapes and scratches, as well as other road debris.

PPF was originally developed by 3M in the 1960's for war efforts during the Vietnam War. It was installed on the helicopter rotor blades of United States Helicopters to help protect the blades from sand, debris, and shrapnel in Vietnam. With the high rate of success it had in this application, over the years, 3M started putting this on everyday vehicles in the hopes of protecting and preserving the paint for long periods of time.
With over 60 years of research and development, today's paint protection film is much different than that of what you would have seen 20-30 years ago on vehicles. 3M Scotchguard Paint Protection Film no longer yellows, which was one of the largest hurdles the industry has had to overcome. Additionally, when installed by an expert, trained installer, 3M PPF actually carries a 10 year warranty against yellowing, bubbling, cracking, and scratching, and is serviceable by any 3M dealer nationwide.
Installing Paint Protection Film on your new or used car is vital to keeping your cars exterior looking as new as the day you purchased it. Even if you have just bought a new car with minor paint damage, most paint protection installers can correct the paint prior to installing PPF, and give your car a brand new look for the life of the vehicle.
A visual added bonus to paint protection film is that once installed, it adds quite a bit of depth to your paint, which can be very appealing to the eye. So while paint protection film is meant to protect the paint on your car, there are other added bonuses that will increase the visual appeal to your vehicles paint.
